Costa Rica – Tree House = zen adventures

We found Playa Selva Tree House online and I was convinced that we needed to stay there.  When we started trying to figure out how to get to MalPais, I hesitated, then I remembered the idea of living in a Banyan tree, walking to the beach, and meditating in the labyrinth.  So, a jeep ride, 2 buses, a sketchy hotel, a ferry, over an hour taxi ride, and a 3 km walk later.. WE WERE HOME!

It was all that I had dreamed up and more.  We intended to stay 3 nights – we stayed 5.  We played hard, went to bed by 9pm and were all up by 7 (woken by the calls of Howler Monkeys).  We watched Capuchin Monkeys monkey around on our tree house in the late afternoons while we lounged at the pool. We (not I) surfed and boogie boarded at Playa Carmen, wandered Santa Teresa, rented a quad to do a 14km off road trip (to Montezuma falls, beaches, and an island cemetery), walked miles of sunny dusty roads, spotted over 5 large types of lizards and more itty bitty lizards then we could count.  All but Eamon did sun burn pretty bad after the day of surfing. Our last day was spent nursing burns with apple cider vinegar splashes, and blended Avocado & essential oils of lavender and frankincense rubs (healing well, moisturised, and smelling fabulous!).

A perk of staying at the tree house was meeting Kurt (aka Smiley) the owner and builder of the tree house.  Kurt is a true artisan and hugely inspired us all with his knowledge and enthusiasm for mixing work and play.  On his suggestion, we rented at 4×4 and took it off roading along the Ruta del Sol – following the coast northwards towards Samara.  We drove along the beach in places, climbed dirt mountain “roads”, and crossed a couple rivers (Rio Boca was to our knees and the car lives a little aesthetic damage – but all is well).  We had a blast and when we got nervous because it was getting dark – we stopped only to find the most welcoming Playa Garza Hotel.  Night swim in the pool, a snack by the roaring waves on the beach – Under more stars then I have ever seen.
